Hi,
No need to activate a trial version or something else, when you install an ESXi, the ESXi is automatically in evaluating mode during 60 days. No need to apply something. The link you are posted, is regarding vsphere operation management.
Then , with a free license the major difference is that you cannot manage an ESXi from a vcenter.
